“These caves have been giving us a great deal of information about the behaviour of these people,” said Finlayson. Since we’re speculating, a chamber at the back of a cave could be quite suggestive – it’s total speculation, but you’re not going to bury people in your kitchen or in your living room.”Įfforts to explore and excavate further are being planned, but the researchers believe the new area could yield precious clues about the existence and society of these coastal, Mediterranean Neanderthals. “I’m speculating now, but what we haven’t found is where they buried their own. ![]() “One of the things that we’ve found on many levels of this cave is clear evidence of occupation – campfires and so on,” said Finlayson. The team is hopeful that their dig down from the apex of the cave could lead to side chambers and perhaps even the odd burial site. “We’re looking to see if there’s more of that child left there.” “We’re still looking there, but there was no occupation by Neanderthals on that level, so we suspect that the hyenas got the kid and killed him or her and dragged her into the back of the cave,” said Finlayson. Four years ago, the researchers came across the milk tooth of a four-year-old Neanderthal child in an area frequented by hyenas. “That’s already a hint that people have been up there.”Įlsewhere in the caves, the team has recovered ample evidence of Neanderthal occupation, from hearths and stone tools to the remains of butchered animals including red deer, ibex, seals and dolphins. “That bit of the cave is probably 20 metres above sea level today, so clearly somebody took it up there some time before 40,000 years ago,” said the professor. Photograph: Clive Finlayson/Gibraltar Museum I wonder whether that lynx whose femur we found was actually scratching on the walls.”Īlthough the bones – which showed no cuts or marks consistent with human intervention – are interesting in themselves, the team also found a large dog whelk shell that raises tantalising possibilities.įrom the left, the entrances to the Bennett’s, Gorham’s, Vanguard and Hyaena caves, which constitute the four main caves of the Gorham’s complex. You’d normally associate that kind of claw mark with bears – and we do have bear remains in the cave, but they look a bit small to me. “We’ve also found six or seven examples of scratched claw marks on the walls of the cave. “Something dragged things into there a long time ago,” said Finlayson. Scattered across the chamber’s surface were the leg bone of a lynx, vertebrae from a spotted hyena, and the large wing bone of a griffon vulture. “In a way, it’s almost like discovering the tomb of Tutankhamun you’re going into a space that no one’s been into for 40,000 years. ![]() “It’s quite a chamber,” Finlayson told the Guardian. It led them to a 13-metre space in the roof of the cave where stalactites hung from the ceiling and broken curtains of rock suggested damage from an ancient earthquake. Last month the team, led by Prof Clive Finlayson, an evolutionary biologist who serves as director of the Gibraltar National Museum, came across a gap in the sediment, which they widened and crawled through.

![]() Wheel bases have shrunk a lot in recent years, as the technology, especially direct drive, has improved, but even on this hybrid drive system it's impressive how much bite it has for its footprint. While absolutely miles behind the best racing wheels in power, I really am impressed by how much grunt it has for its diminutive size. It avoids the pitfalls of a purely geared system, which often feels clunkier, and feels much better for it. My first impression of the hybrid drive on the T128 was just how smooth it is as you throw it around. This drive is a combination of both gear and belt-driven force feedback, and while Thrustmaster has toned down the power on the T128 drive versus the T248, it's still noted as being 20% more powerful than the TMX. The key to the T128's success is that it shares the same Hybrid Drive system as found in the Thrustmaster T248. Our previous pick for the best budget racing wheel was the Thrustmaster TMX Force Feedback, but the T128 is an improvement in every way on that aged design. The Thrustmaster T128 is the budget racing wheel to buy. With or without extras, this is truly one of the best ways to get into sim racing today and the best racing wheel I've tested. While that's partially down to the direct-drive technology at the heart of the GT DD Pro, it's also how simple this wheel is to set up for each game, even those it doesn't necessarily play nicely with. That's not something I've necessarily felt with cheaper models. I jumped into Forza Horizon and felt no less comfortable throwing this wheel around than in F1 2021 with tighter force feedback settings. What I enjoy about this kit is its versatility. While technically built for Gran Turismo 7, it's no worse off on the PC across a range of sim racing and sim-light games, such as Assetto Corsa and F1 22. The finely-tuned vibration and rotation through the wheel transmit so much information from the game's engine into your hands-with the right racing game, one that has simulation-grade feedback, it's an absolute joy to throw the GT DD around the track. When you set it up just right, the GT DD Pro sings. The finely-tuned vibration and rotation through the wheel transmit so much information from the game's engine into your hands A fast rotation back to the center also means you can throw the wheel around and never feel like losing control over your steering in tight chicanes. This wheelbase's feedback ensures you're painfully aware when you take a little too much curb and helps inform you of your traction throughout a corner. However, you can upgrade to a load-cell kit sold by Fanatec, which replaces the brake and leaves the spare brake to become a clutch pedal. The included CSL Pedals don't come with a clutch or a load-cell brake. ![]() The wheel itself is one of my favorite of all those I've tested, delivering a glutton of buttons that are easy to get familiar with. ![]() The wheelbase is this solid metal, passively-cooled monster, and into that slots a sturdy and straightforward clamp. The GT DD's construction is pretty much immaculate. But don't worry I've chosen several affordable options to go with it, all of which deliver force feedback and an all-around great driving experience. The best PC racing wheels come in a wide range of prices. Hitting the digital road with a dozen or so wheels helped me narrow some of those down so you can make the most of your racing cockpit. Racing wheels aren't cheap the options are daunting. With the best racing wheel strapped to your desk, you'll have that extra level of immersion in your favorite racing games, like Forza Motorsport or F1 23.Ī racing wheel is one of the best PC gaming buys, and I've tried out tons of racing wheels to get a handle on which ones that are worth your hard-earned cash. The best racing wheels for PC offer more feedback from the car and racetrack than lesser kit, and that means you can respond to changes in drive and traction with faster and with greater accuracy. It's not all about channeling your inner Lewis Hamilton or Dale Earnhardt Jr, though having heaps of raw talent sure does help win races. It's an affordable direct drive setup that easily enables me to indulge in my F1 fantasies. Quite simply, the absolute best PC racing wheel is the Fanatec GT DD Pro. ![]() If you think it would be interesting to others, please share this guide with plans that teach you how to build oriole feeders on Facebook and Twitter. Planetary Duality is something akin to a concept album, though it is far from fully developed and, at thirty-five minutes, doesn’t manage the scope and scale for which its subject matter screams. This review will limit discussion of this to the statements just made and focus instead on the level of enjoyment this album offers and which aspects of it specifically lend to or detract from its appeal. The move will be framed as a vain/valiant attempt to distance themselves from the overloaded and brokedown -core bandwagon. As it stands, however, Planetary Duality is album that is escapes mediocrity only due to the inclusion of some interesting material and exemplary performances from the musicians. Some other reviews will say a lot about The Faceless’ previous -core leanings and make a big deal about this album’s movement away from that style and toward a stricter technical death metal approach. If the band increased the frequency of original ideas and made the songwriting more consistent, then they would become a force to be reckoned with. The biggest problem with Planetary Duality is that most of the ideas presented are not original, and have been done much better by bands such as Necrophagist and Death. The album's brevity and the even distribution of interesting songs just barely save Planetary Duality from becoming boring. By the end of the album, many of the ideas seem to be reused once or twice, and a lot of the songs blend together, despite the band's effort to add variety. Many of the riffs resort to rapidly strumming the same note over and over again rhythmically, leading to many predictable, unoriginal, and bland segments. However, the songwriting is very inconsistent. Also, The Faceless try to add variety to the album by splicing in the occasional clean solo, distorted vocal, or spacey piano, and these unconventional moments are the most memorable segments of the album. In addition, the Planetary Duality duo that ends the album ranks among the best technical death metal songs of the past decade. Much of the material, such as XenoChrist contains good songwriting, and is absolutely enthralling. However, the album's main strengths and weaknesses are displayed through the songwriting. However, the vocals are sadly generic, and are far less entertaining than the other instruments, and therefore are an evident downside. The singing is not poorly done in the least, and Michael Rydquist and Michael Keene, the vocalists, show great versatility as they alternate from growling to shrieking, and sometimes to computer-altered and even clean singing. Every instrument is played flawlessly and with blistering speed, with the exception of the vocals. From the tremolo-picked intro to album opener Prison Born and the majestic sweeps in Ancient Covenant, to the incredibly fast riffs of closer Planetary Duality II-A Prophecies Fruition, the band insists on pushing their impressive technical abilities to the very limits and almost never taking breaks. When listening to Planetary Duality, the first noticeable aspect of the music is the technicality. While this nascent band's music is not yet fully matured, it is still interesting and it definitely displays a band with much potential to become one of the future titans of technical death metal. The Faceless, one of the more interesting contemporary technical death metal bands, certainly falls into the latter category, as evidenced by their most recent album, Planetary Duality. Consequentially, their music was usually not a revelation or a giant leap forward for the genre, but rather a collection of enjoyable songs. On the other hand, some bands decided to take a fun, entertaining formula and stick with it. Bands such as Death and Edge of Sanity experimented with injecting death metal with progressive touches and melody. ![]() ![]() ![]() Atheist, for example, needed to add elements of jazz to their death metal sound in order to stay content with themselves. ![]() Some bands feel the need to constantly advance their music. Will it provide you with some fast, fun metal? Oh, hell yes. Review Summary: Will this album change your opinion of technical death metal?
